2005 D Jefferson Nickel is part of the Westward Journey nickel series, which ran from 2004–2005. The obverse of the coin features a new likeness of Thomas Jefferson, which was the first change to his portrait in 67 years. The image was included to recognize Jefferson's role in the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The reverse of the coin depicts an American bison pawing the ground, and the word "liberty" on the obverse is based on Jefferson's handwriting.
